I remember reading an article somewhere that compared the Wikipedia model where users create content for social capital with the Mahalo model of paying users to create content. I think it came to the conclusion that bringing money into the picture actually decreased participation and quality, but I can't find the article.

Anyone have any thoughts or links to resources about this?

Well, actually Mahalo is like Wikipedia but for profits, I found two great articles that will provide you with the information you seek. Hope they're useful.
