I do my own software development (which means no cost, except for my time). I recently am pushing for a 6 month completion date on a big hosted project that I believe will bring in quite a bit of revenue. The only problem is that my daytime programming job is demanding. If I looked for venture capital just to cover for my living expenses while I complete the project so that I can focus directly on it only, is that common.

Staying awake is always an option for you as BeMeCollective has already mentioned, however that will only result in you being exhausted all of the time.

I would suggest that you submit your idea to a tech "incubator" like TechStars or YCombinator. If they accept your application, they will give you money in exchange for a small percentage of your business. These sorts of places tend to look for people who can make the idea work themselves (in your case you are a code wiz). These business incubators often encourage the founder to use the investment money as living expenses because they are already proficient at what they do (programming).

I hope this has been helpful to you, let me know if you need any more info or clarification!

Your product is not completed and you have no customers? Very unlikely unless you have an amazing potential product and a good track record of prior success. You will probably spend more time finding/talking with investors than it will take to finish your product. And if you can get some customers and revenue first you will be in a much better negotiating position.

Just stay awake at night and work on your side project, like the rest of us do ;)

If the idea has potential and you are selling to business customers, couldn't you offer them a reduced price and priority maintenance if they pay for your product now. Once you have one customer that does this, it becomes a lot easier to get investors. I have never found an investor though, but I have wasted a lot of time on finding them.
