I would like to know if it would be smarter to create a site based on affiliate programs before jumping into creating my own marketplace. I mean, joining some affiliate programs, post products and see how they sell on my site. If it has potential, then thinking about my own marketplace. Is this a good strategy or should I go straight for my own marketplace?

What is your suggestion?

As I see it you have a pretty complete idea and your strategy is good enough to start small. However, I would encourage you to make a deeper research on your market and see if you can approach a more specific niche market to sell those products. Your marketplace success will depend on how smart you are to identify your niche market and the opportunities you can find on it.

Regarding affiliate programs I recommend to go about Commission Junction, Amazon and ClickBank.
