I want to know how does pre-registration work for different products or ideas and if it’s actually a good way to protect from copyright. How do you do it? Is it costly?

The U.S copyright office says pre-registration is not like registering in terms of copyright and that you’re not fully protected with it. It also mentions it’s useful to avoid infringement and if you haven’t finished what you’re planning to do.

Preregistration is a service intended for works that have had a history of prerelease infringement. It focuses on the infringement of movies, recorded music, and other copyrighted materials before copyright owners have had the opportunity to market fully their products.
