It's applied to abstract values created by a company that can be turn into actual value. Goodwill means customer loyalty, the time you're in the marketplace, intellectual property, customers list (quality and admeasurement ), etc.

The appraisal of goodwill can vary by the performance of the company, so it's not the same for all of them.
