I personally love the idea of pingbacks and trackbacks, while yes google can index quickly. I think the idea of Pingbacks where to allow the site owner to know if someone if talking about your site.

That is why i think they are Relevant.

In an ideal world where Spam does not exist, trackbacks are great, however we don't live in that world and many popular blogs end up turning trackbacks off because of the Admin overhead.

I think they are still relevant, so long as they are monitored correctly. As Floyd mentions, spam is a huge concern with them.

Another thing to note is I think that be default Wordpress will automatically no-follow any trackback, so the SEO benefit to your site if you track back to someone elses post is fairly minimal.

I think if nothing else they are a nice shout out to the blog you are borrowing an idea/content from.
