What would be better for a very niche-oriented website (blog)? Google adsense or getting a vertical ad network that targets that niche?

I've been checking the different options and comparing the eCPM's on each one. Adsense was a lot bigger than the Vertcal I was using, which didn´t make a lot of sense, since I should have been getting premium rates with my vertical ad network. The secret is that I was mixing apples and oranges.

In my case the eCPM (AD eCPM) of the vertical ad network was 47% bigger than Adsense´s. However, they did not serve ads on all of my slots, so the "site's eCPM" was greater with Google Adsense. We do get a lot of visitors daily, so the advice I'd give is get both if possible, and via Google Ad Manager you will be able to show the ads that give you more eCPM, thus, more $.

By using Vertical ad networks you can charge premium rates over cost per click campaigns. I personally think that Vertical ad networks are great if you wanna monetize your site. First you need to have about 25K impressions per month. You’ll have to do your homework in order to find an appropriate partner.

If you don`t have a good number of impressions just forget about it.

Is there any place where you can find data about how to reach the 25k impressions? – Barbara Watson Nov 2 at 19:53

I believe Adsense offers you the best solution today. It'll depend on if it exists a vertical ad network in your niche. The great thing about the internet is that you can test and see what works for your site. I'll first go with Adsense, because it's very easy to use, and you don't waste any time. In the meantime research for vertical adnetworks and when you find one, you give it a try and compare it with your adsense figures.

From my experience, choosing the vertical ad networks has its own set of risks. 08-09 haven't been the best years for the finance and travel industries in general, and online advertising is affected because of it. Horizontals are more insulated from specific industry ups and downs, by switching focus to cover other critical categories that aren't being as hard hit by the current economic climate.

I would go with AdSense, at least at first, to play it safe.

I would say the best way to go is starting off with AdSense you can then combine it with Google AdManager, the free adserving solution from Google that let's you do automatic yield management against other adnetworks. This way you will always get the higher CPM available from any given pageview in your site. If AdSense is the best choice, it will show AdSense ads, if not, it will show ads from the adnetwork that currently has the best offer.

Adsense is super easy to set up however networks such as Glam media can have eCPMs up to 10 times higher depending on the niche. These niche networks are often hard to get into and may not have enough inventory to cover your whole site however.

It really depends on your niche, because some niche areas have high revenues on adsense.

AdSense and Google AdManager combined sound good in order to keep your CPM high. What are other alternatives?
