Hi,

What happens if you've registered a domain name (for the next two years), and the registrar goes under/bankrupt/AWOL? Do you still retain the domain name until the two years are up, or is it available for someone else to purchase?

I read about something similar happening to RegisterFly. I guess the best thing to do is go with a well-established company, but I was wondering what happens to the domain name, and the owner's rights, if something like this actually happened.

Thanks

You can just go with anyone. The registrar only registers the domain. your domain registration is not with godaddy or a domain registrar, it's with ICANN, so there's no problem if your registrar goes under.

Hi, Thanks for the help. It's good to know that the domain's safe :) – ProCo Nov 24 at 19:05

ProCo,

I actually had some domains with RegisterFly when they shut down and everything transitioned fairly smoothly to Enom Central without my needing to do anything.

I like Enom, but any major registrar will be fine and not something that you'll need to worry about. Your domains won't just disappear if the registrar goes under, they will be transferred to whatever new company will be responsible for them.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. This was partly on behalf of a friend who had a small (recommended by word of mouth) company register the domain name. Everything seems above board, but he was just curious on what happens if the small company goes under. – ProCo Nov 24 at 19:05
