My website is finally searchable on Google but it's ranked in the hundreds. Why is that?

It can be a little tricky to get better search engine rankings. It's not a perfect science. Search engine rules for ranking can change from time to time. Google might not fully read your page because of structural issues, or a lack of decent content, or if there aren't any decent websites that link to yours. Your website could also be too small to be of any value to people searching for your topic, or any other range of problems.

Look for a niche to exploit. For example, consider whether your website has greater appeal to a local, national, or international region.

I always wondered how they did that. – Nath O'Reilly Nov 26 at 22:54

It depends on keywords, Google relies heavily in inbound relevant links to rank a site too.

So much to say, so little time...let me try to break this down a bit:

  1. Determine your keywords - what words would you expect your customers to search for you on? How competitive are those keywords? If they are highly competitive, focus on "long tail" keywords or ones where you will have a chance to rank high. For example, my company has little chance to rank on "phone service", but we do on "digital phone solution". A long-tail example would be "hosted digital phone solution". Pick many keywords strings that you want to focus on.
  2. Align your content with your keywords - every page on your website has a chance to rank. You don't want to use the same keyword on every page. Take your home page and make it your main keyword. Make sure you have that key word in your off-page SEO (Title tag, meta description, and meta keywords). Then, make sure that key word is in your headline (H1) and appears in your text as well. On subsequent pages, do the same thing for other keywords you want to focus upon.
  3. Add content - Google gives your site "authority" and ranks it higher if it is fresh and is updated often. You need to give Google a reason to crawl your site. Adding pages is a good thing! Blogs are a great way to add relevant and useful content without disrupting the structure of your site. Register your blog with blog directories.
  4. Promote via social media - build a twitter following and LinkedIn and/or Facebook. Announce new blog articles, post links to them in discussion groups. If you have interesting content, your blog/tweets and such will be linked to. Creating more and more inbound links to your site is another way Google determines "authority" and will rank you higher.

Sounds like a lot of work? It is, but creating inbound traffic to your business is a lot cheaper than traditional and worn out direct marketing efforts.

Remember one piece of advise I will give you, dont waste to much time testing methods cause what you find today can be rendered obsolete by tomorrow. Instead, use logic and common sense, focus on your content and what your visitors are looking for and Google will do the rest for you.
