You can do anything that you set your mind to! College is not necessary to be successful it does provide you with all the right tools and information you will need, but you can find your own resources of learning and still be successful. |

For a video response to this question, click here With the success of young pioneers like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerburg; the question has to be asked: Is college necessary to be a successful entrepreneur?Well, yes and no. A coolege degree is by no means a prerequisite for success as an entrepreneur, but many successful entrepreneurs will tell you that the college experience was a huge benefit, and heolped shape their thoughts, goals, and even relationships in a way that was helpful to their business. Honestly, the conversation shouldn’t be about school, it should be about education. In any industry, in any trade, you need to be properly educated on your craft. As an entrepreneur, you need to be at least knowledgeable in several industries, especially in the beginning stages of your business. Education can come in the form of college classes, but also can come in the form of knowledgeable mentors, seminar training, and good old fashioned reading and staying current on the events in your field. Don’t get caught up in the specifics of how you need to be educated, spend more time defining what you really want to do in life, then learn accordingly. Even still, college is the top way to go in terms of networking with the future leaders of your generation. If you’re not sure what you want to major in, get social, get involved in organizations and activities that will give you the most exposure to find something that you really like and enjoy. |

Though a college education is not required to be a successful entrepreneur, the valuable knowledge and experiences derived from a formal education should not be written off too quickly. Theory and practice combined, create "praxis," which in the long run, is much better than one over the other. Jim Rohn said it best, "Formal education will make you a living; self education will make you a fortune." |

The most valuable aspect of college as Elijah pointed out is the networking. The education you can pick up on your own but you need a substitute for the networking aspect. Check meetup and your local chamber to see if there are any local small business groups in your area. From recommendations for professional services (accounting, web design etc) to having people promote you it helps to have a network. Online social networking like Linked In helps as well. That being said, it really depends on your field. In computing, work experience often counts for more than formal education. Certificates will often get you that crucial first meeting and then its just selling yourself. |

College degree = sitting in a desk for 4 years as you listen to a long string of professors and instructors babble endlessly about their visions of socialist nirvana. You actually have a much better chance of being a successful entreprenuer if you avoid this worthless distraction. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are both college dropouts. That says a lot for the value of a University degree. |

Yes it is not only possible but might be beneficial :) I have a PhD and had to un-learn a lot of things when I became and entrepreneur. I feel it took me a little longer because of it. I am not putting down a PhD at all; I have one and am proud of it. But am talking about PhD with respect to being an entrepreneur. Because most of us with higher education tend to hang around people that are academically oriented, rather than business oriented. As a result, we are programmed with academics. Not business. On the other hand, if you dont go to college, you are not programmed or conditioned in wrong directions (wrt being an entrepreneur). Exceptions are places like Harvard where there seem to be an exceptionally large number of entrepreneurs incubating. While you dont need a college degree, you certainly need a business education. After going to IIT Chennai (a premier institute for technology in India) and IISc (Indian Institute of Science) a premier research institute in India and getting my PhD in Univ of Illinois, of all the places I learned business by running my own network marketing business, on the side, while working in a job. That helped me get my "business education". So here are some benefits:
1) no conditioning that is detrimental
2) hang around entrepreneurs and you will get better than college business education
3) you will save 4 years and get a head start
4) if you are working on internet or mobile space, education is so far behind that college does not teach you anything as future is happening faster than ever before and college is training you for things that are rapidly becoming obsolete. Hope this helps Best, Kanth Miriyala www.mikiyaka.com/blog |

Having a college degree can only benefit you, however, it should not stop you from becoming successful without it. There are many others who decided school was not for them. Perfect example would be Bill Gates, who dropped out of Harvard University to pursue his dream in creating computer software. Look at where he is now. To be a great entrepreneur, you need to understand the word "DISCIPLINE" You can define this word is so many different ways, and apply it differently, but only a few are successful at doing it. It is just like trying to lose weight, you can't possibly get back into shape if you give in to those cravings or do everything half asked. Discipline means having the strong ability to follow orders and not letting other factors affect your decision. You have to stay on track and keep focus. Know that you have a goal you have to reach and being discipline with your objectives and plans that you set out will get you there faster than you think. I provided several great articles that I hope will help you in becoming successful with your business.
