Balance is a concept, not a destination. Your requirements and needs for work and family will change constantly. Bending to meet these while understanding that the other may take a back seat for a minute is key. Being OK with this is hard, but is the secret to doing it successfully.

The textbook definition of balance has two parts of speech. One is a noun one is a verb. Both refer to a condition where things are evenly distributed or moving towards that end. What many people think of as the ideal when they hear this concept of work-life balance is actually 'equilibrium' and is a whole different concept altogether.

Balance as an approach is one that considers the whole self; the body, the mind, the work, and the relationships in your life. These all contribute to your identity and by proxy your success. Burning yourself out hurts all of these things and can jeopardize your long term health in each.
