Interesting topic and one I’ve had to deal with on all levels. In my experience:
Employee who has potential/yet toxic - this is easy and it’s a discussion on most occasions about moving on. In some cases try and turn it around through coaching.
Employee who is killing it - this is a coaching situation. Find out what drives them, makes them tick and bring that into alignment as change but one they can relate to and see the benefit of why!
Business partner - if you are not aligned move on. It can get messy but keep it simple. Pay up and take some pain if it is a buy out. Both parties have to take some pain on the separation. Learn from the lesson and move on.
