How long should you validate your idea?

This question came up during a cohort meeting today. I thought it would be worth sharing.

How long do you think you should spend validating your idea? My best answer is long enough to get proof that someone wants your product and would PAY for it over your (direct and indirect) competition. The more you need to spend on your MVP, the more proof you should get.

Many founders don't like this answer because they'd rather start building. And some are worried that they will lose momentum. On the flip side, I know one too many founders that put all their money into building something that nobody wanted. That's a tough way to go and usually ends up with sunk-cost theory and a lot of bitterness.

Does anybody else have a different opinion? Or maybe more advice?
