How Do I Make My First Startup Hire?

Making your first hire can be scary and overwhelming.

What if I make the wrong hire? How much will it end up costing me?

Fortunately, there are a few tricks to minimize the risk in hiring.

  1. Start with your network. Get referrals from friends, past colleagues, and connections. People tend to usually only recommend people they trust.
  2. Begin in a contract role. This lets you have easier outs and also allows both parties make sure it's a good fit before putting a ring on it.
  3. Think global. Hiring from places like LATAM or Asia gives you great quality without breaking the bank.

There will always be some inherent risk in hiring. But if we take small steps like above, we can be strategic about scaling teams and growing our business!
